Recommended listening: Wagner Lovers Rejoice!

Decca has just released a 33 CD boxed set of Wagner's 10 mature operas, the so-called Bayreuth Canon, in performances recorded at the Bayreuth Festival Play House, which Wagner designed and built especially for the performance of his works. These are legendary performances. The conductors and singers are some of the finest Wagnerians of the 20th century.

In the U.S., Amazon.com is charging an amazing $55.99 for this set, less than $2 per disc. And if you select the Super Saver option, there is no shipping charge. (I am sure comparable savings are available to our readers around the world.)

Most of Wagner's operas come in 3 and 4 CD sets (sometimes 5 discs with slow performances of Götterdämmerung and Die Meistersinger). So, for the price of some recordings of single operas, you can get 10 operas. For instance, the recent Parsifal with Placido Domingo conduted by Christian Thielemann costs $67.98 at Amazon, $11.99 more than Decca's complete set. If you want to buy Karl Böhm's complete Ring Cycle, it costs more than $100. Or you can get the same Böhm Ring Cycle, and six other operas besides, for a bit more than half the price in the Decca set.

This is an ideal set for a young person who is just beginning to explore and appreciate Wagner. (Unfortunately, there are no complete libretti, but one can acquire those relatively easily in book form.) But even real Wagnerphiles will find this hard to resist. I have multiple recordings of all Wagner's operas, and I looked into this set only because I thought I might give it as a gift. But to my surprise, I discovered that I already had only one of these performances (Böhm's Tristan und Isolde), which occupies three discs. So 30 discs are unexplored territory for me. Hence the gift ended up being to myself.

Savitri Devi:
“The Superman: The Purpose of the Universe, the Meaning of Life”

Any philosopher worthy of the title has to have an answer to the questions: “What’s it all about?” “What’s the meaning of human life?” “What’s the meaning of existence in general?” Savitri Devi all these questions at once, and she reveals her deep debt to Nietzsche in the process. These are passages selected from the new edition of Defiance.

Defiance update

I have now sent out about three-quarters of the copies of Defiance. The remainer should go out over the next ten days. I apologize for the slowness, but I am working alone and have urgent competing demands on my time.

Here are some reactions to the new edition:

“Sumptuously prepared!”

“I am most impressed with the care and the attention to detail you devoted to producing this handsome new edition of Defiance. A great job!”

“Savitri Devi has had an enormous positive influence on my life. So I was actually moved when I discovered what a beautiful edition you have produced of Defiance. Savitri Devi had bad luck with publishers and printers during her lifetime, so I applaud your efforts to create books worthy of this noble woman and her ideas.”

“A splendid book! I can hardly wait for The Lightning and the Sun and Pilgrimage.”

“This new edition of Defiance is most impressive. It is every bit as well-edited and well-produced as a book from one of the best university presses. I particularly like the illustrations you included. The black endsheets are also a nice touch. I will of course buy all the books you bring out in this edition, but I am most eagerly awaiting your translations of Memories and Reflections and The Lotus Pond, since I do not know French.”

“. . . although I admit I was perturbed by the delay in printing, after my first look at the book I was so completely glad that you took the time to find a high quality printer, even if it did cause a delay. The book looks fantastic, the quality is great and I love the format you chose of using Savitri Devi's original covers on the back and different photos on the front. With esoteric and vastly under-read books like these take as much time as you need to get the quality you need.  So I wanted to express my many thanks for the work you do. Please keep it up. Savitri Devi's works should not perish from the Earth. I can't wait for the next one. Thank you so much again.”

“Savitri Devi teaches us that we should not mourn the loss of anything in our world when the present Dark Age collapses upon itself. But I just can't share that sentiment. The new Golden Age would lack lustre without the works of Wagner or Nietzsche or Savitri herself. That is why I am so delighted that you are reprinting her books in durable and attractive editions. Making them limited editions also means that people will be more likely to take care of them. It is pleasing to think that they may outlast the Kali Yuga. You are producing Golden Age books with Dark Age technology. Savitri, who did not disdain technology like other radical ecologists and Traditionalists, would appreciate that, I think. I know I do.”

“I really appreciate your excellent site. Savitri deserves it; her idealism is pure and completely devoid of any trace of egotism or materialism.”

If you purchased a copy of the limited edition of Gold in the Furnace from the Archive, I have reserved you the same number in the Defiance edition. Please contact the Archivist if you wish to arrange payment or be placed on a waiting list for unsold copies.

Update on Defiance edition

Good news for our long-suffering purchasers of Defiance: On 1 April 2008, the Archive singed a contract with a printing company. We will be sending them the files for the book the week of April 7th. The printers have a six to eight week turn-around time, meaning that they should ship us the books in early to mid June, and the books should arrive around one week after that. This means that orders should be reaching purchasers around the end of June. We thank you for your patience, and we are excitedly awaiting the completion of this project. We expect the final product to equal or exceed the quality of our edition of Gold in the Furnace. Then we can get to work on our most anticipated project of all: a new complete and unabridged edition of The Lightning and the Sun.

Irminsul’s Racial Nationalist Library

Irminsul’s excellent online Racial Nationalist Library has again disappeared at its regular web address http://library.flawlesslogic.com. Fortunately, the site has been mirrored completely at http://www.racerealist.com/index.htm. We have updated all of the Archive’s links to their Savitri Devi texts accordingly. In view of the danger of the Racial Nationalist Library disappearing altogether, we have also copied all of their Savitri Devi texts and will eventually place them all in the Archive.

Updates and “Policy” Change

Answers to four questions recently posed by friends of the Archive:

1. Q: Why has the Archive been updated so infrequently of late? A: My “day job” has become quite demanding in recent months, and I have been too drained and too distracted to keep on top of the Archive. But there is light at the end of the tunnel!

2. Q: Where is Defiance? A: Delayed again. I am tempted to complain of the difficulties of publishing controversial authors in the twilight of the Kali Yuga. But in the end the responsibility is entirely mine, because I am not willing to compromise on quality, and quality requires printers of proven quality, and it takes time, which has been scarce and fragmented of late. Realistically, we will have the books in hand near the end of March. I will post updates here as soon as I have firm information.

3. Q: Why risk disappointing loyal readers of Savitri by announcing release dates and then changing them? A: Good point. From now on, I will not announce volumes in the Centennial Edition until they are actually in print and on hand. That way, you will never be disappointed and always be pleasantly surprised.

4. Q: What has happened to the Savitri Diva Project? A: There are now ten confirmed artists working on eleven tracks. Three of these tracks have been finished and delivered. The others are in various stages of production. In addition, another artist may be able to do a track, given time. I have extended the deadline until 1 May 2008 to give sufficient time. Then I will work on the packaging and getting the disc manufactured.
