Recommended listening: Wagner Lovers Rejoice!
Decca has just released a 33 CD boxed set of Wagner's 10 mature operas, the so-called Bayreuth Canon, in performances recorded at the Bayreuth Festival Play House, which Wagner designed and built especially for the performance of his works. These are legendary performances. The conductors and singers are some of the finest Wagnerians of the 20th century.
In the U.S., Amazon.com is charging an amazing $55.99 for this set, less than $2 per disc. And if you select the Super Saver option, there is no shipping charge. (I am sure comparable savings are available to our readers around the world.)
Most of Wagner's operas come in 3 and 4 CD sets (sometimes 5 discs with slow performances of Götterdämmerung and Die Meistersinger). So, for the price of some recordings of single operas, you can get 10 operas. For instance, the recent Parsifal with Placido Domingo conduted by Christian Thielemann costs $67.98 at Amazon, $11.99 more than Decca's complete set. If you want to buy Karl Böhm's complete Ring Cycle, it costs more than $100. Or you can get the same Böhm Ring Cycle, and six other operas besides, for a bit more than half the price in the Decca set.
This is an ideal set for a young person who is just beginning to explore and appreciate Wagner. (Unfortunately, there are no complete libretti, but one can acquire those relatively easily in book form.) But even real Wagnerphiles will find this hard to resist. I have multiple recordings of all Wagner's operas, and I looked into this set only because I thought I might give it as a gift. But to my surprise, I discovered that I already had only one of these performances (Böhm's Tristan und Isolde), which occupies three discs. So 30 discs are unexplored territory for me. Hence the gift ended up being to myself.

Defiance update
I have now sent out about three-quarters of the copies of Defiance. The remainer should go out over the next ten days. I apologize for the slowness, but I am working alone and have urgent competing demands on my time.

Defiance is here!
The Archive’s long-awaited new edition of Savitri Devi’s Defiance has arrived from the printers, and the book is beautiful. The limited numbered edtion of 200 hardcovers has been entirely sold or reserved. Several copies have not, however, been paid for. After a while, some of these books may be placed back on sale. Update on Defiance edition
Good news for our long-suffering purchasers of Defiance: On 1 April 2008, the Archive singed a contract with a printing company. We will be sending them the files for the book the week of April 7th. The printers have a six to eight week turn-around time, meaning that they should ship us the books in early to mid June, and the books should arrive around one week after that. This means that orders should be reaching purchasers around the end of June. We thank you for your patience, and we are excitedly awaiting the completion of this project. We expect the final product to equal or exceed the quality of our edition of Gold in the Furnace. Then we can get to work on our most anticipated project of all: a new complete and unabridged edition of The Lightning and the Sun. |

Q: Why has the Archive been updated so infrequently of late? A: My “day job” has become quite demanding in recent months, and I have been too drained and too distracted to keep on top of the Archive. I am tempted to complain of the difficulties of publishing controversial authors in the twilight of the Kali Yuga. But in the end the responsibility is entirely mine, because I am not willing to compromise on quality, and quality requires printers of proven quality, and it takes time, which has been scarce and fragmented of late. Realistically, we will have the books in hand near the end of March. I will post updates here as soon as I have firm information. 3. Q: Why risk disappointing loyal readers of Savitri by announcing release dates and then changing them? A: Good point. From now on, I will not announce volumes in the Centennial Edition until they are actually in print and on hand. That way, you will never be disappointed and always be pleasantly surprised. 4. The others are in various stages of production. In addition, another artist may be able to do a track, given time. I have extended the deadline until 1 May 2008 to give sufficient time.
